AP loosens up on ‘hopefully’ | Poynter.


Prior to this update, AP, “the bible of the newspaper industry,” only allowed “hopefully” to mean “in a hopeful manner” and did not accept usage of the word to mean “it is hoped” as in “Hopefully, they will be open to changes.” On the contrary, Merriam-Webster.com has a video saying “hopefully” as used in the example is a disjunct and should be acceptable. In most copy desks, AP and Merriam-Webster are usually the prescribed references.
